‘The Predator’ director Shane Black has revealed the film’s lead character…
During an interview with Empire Magazine, director Shane Black revealed the name of the main character in the sci-fi sequel, ‘The Predator’… and it won’t be Arnold Schwarzenegger.
“The hero of the film, the name I’ve given the guy, is Quinn McKenna,” he said. I guess that rules out Dutch being the focus of the new movie.
But according to Empire, the name could well change… after all, Black admits that the production is still in the early stages of pre-production, and nobody has been cast just yet.
Still, it’s a rather tantalising detail.
“At this point we’re thinking we’ll project on a screen… it’ll be in colour…” he joked.
But while it’s still early days, it sounds as though Shane Black does have a rather ambitious vision for the upcoming ‘Predator’ sequel.
“It’s an attempt to ‘event-ise’ the Predator again,” he explained. “[An attempt to] make it more mysterious.”
And it sounds as though he’s not such a fan of some of the sci-fi sagas earlier instalments.
“The Predator has been so overdone. Every couple of years, there’s a knock-off churned out. Very low budget with a guaranteed return.”
He went on to explain that he wants to achieve “the same sense of wonderment and newness that Close Encounters had when that came out. That’s what we want. It’s very impossible. But we’re gonna try.”
It certainly sounds as though Shane Black is on the right track, as he explained that they’re scaling everything back – returning to the more intimate setting of the original.
“It doesn’t have to be 50 Predators riding motorcycles,” he said. “It just has to feel like a powerful story that has a lot of flavours and textures.”
It’s certainly interesting to see Black attempting to recapture what made the original ‘Predator’ quite so special. After all, it doesn’t have to be a mounting spectacle of CGI and explosions to capture the imagination.
But can Quinn McKenna survive ‘The Predator’?
For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
‘The Predator’ heads to cinemas on 2 March 2018.
